Smyle Dental's own guidance

How to manage a dental emergency

Reproduced from the practice's own advice. Having a dental emergency can be scary, but staying calm and acting fast is important.

1

Toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to clean between your teeth. If the pain does not go away, call an emergency care provider for help.

2

Knocked-out teeth

Gently rinse the tooth with water, but do not scrub it. Try to put the tooth back in its socket and hold it there. If you cannot, keep the tooth in a container of milk or saline and see a dentist right away.

3

Severe pain

Use a cold cloth on your cheek to reduce swelling. You can take over-the-counter pain medicine, but do not put aspirin directly on your gums. Call your dentist to find out what else you should do.

4

Then get seen

For all dental emergencies, it is important to get professional help to prevent problems and get the right treatment. Call (661) 324-1000.

What if it happens outside office hours?+

Call (661) 324-1000 and say what has happened. Specific opening times are not published on the site, so the office will tell you what is possible.

What should I do right now?+

For a toothache, rinse with warm water and floss between the teeth. For a knocked-out tooth, rinse it gently without scrubbing, try to place it back in the socket, and if you cannot, keep it in milk or saline and see a dentist right away. For severe pain, use a cold cloth on the cheek and avoid putting aspirin on the gums. That is the practice’s own guidance, and none of it replaces being seen.

When should I go to an emergency room instead?+

Call 911 if you have any difficulty breathing or swallowing. Go straight to an emergency room for swelling spreading across the face, jaw, neck or eye, bleeding you cannot stop, or a significant injury to the face or jaw. Those are beyond what a dental office visit is for.

Can I use my dental insurance?+

The office works with numerous insurance carriers and offers a variety of payment options. Where your policy lets you choose your own dentist, the office is happy to file your claims so your insurer reimburses you. CareCredit payment plans are also available.
